Eliza Bryant Village Honors Black History Month 2018

by Katie Boland 0 comments

Greetings from Danny R. Williams, JD, MNO, LNHA, President & CEO of Eliza Bryant Village: As we celebrate Black History Month here in Cleveland, it’s important to pause and reflect on the tremendous contribution the Village has made to greater Cleveland and its black citizens throughout its history. Founded in 1896 by Eliza Simmons Bryant, we’ve been providing high quality compassionate care to seniors and their caregivers for more than 120 years. Whether it’s in our skilled nursing facility, home care, adult day care or in our affordable independent senior housing, we provide a variety of options for Cleveland’s seniors and their caregivers.   Black History Month is a great time to stop and reflect on the contributions of black folks throughout the country. However, here at Eliza Bryant Village, we feel it’s important to make history every day. In fact we do that by reminding each other – We Are All Eliza. So as you celebrate Black History Month in whatever way you choose, do something historic today.  Come and learn more about Eliza Bryant Village:

A Global Giving Movement | November 28, 2017

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving  and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

The goal of the Eliza Bryant Village 2017 #GivingTuesday campaign is to raise $50,000  to remodel 50 bathrooms in our 175-skilled nursing facility.

Due to the unstable economic and health care climate, we do not currently have extra resources to invest in these improvements.  So far, we  have raised $30,700! Please help us reach our goal by Tuesday, November 28, 2017 to improve the lives of our seniors in their golden years.

Danny Williams named President & CEO of Eliza Bryant Village

williams-headshot2 Eliza Bryant Village's Board of Trustees is pleased to announce Danny R. Williams, JD, MNO has been selected to serve as the next President and CEO. Williams will join Eliza Bryant Village on January 1, 2017. He will succeed Harvey Shankman, who will retire on December 31st, after providing 27 years of remarkable leadership.

Williams has spent his professional career serving the Greater Cleveland community, with over 30 years of experience in the legal, nonprofit and community health field. Since 2006, Williams has served as the Executive Director of The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland, now known as Circle Health Services, a federally qualified health center that serves thousands of medically underserved patients annually.

"We are delighted to have Danny Williams join Eliza Bryant Village as we celebrate our 120th Anniversary of providing outstanding healthcare, programs and services for seniors along the continuum of care. We are confident Danny will work well with our Board and dedicated staff to help The Village continue to grow in providing high quality services to help seniors as they age," said Jean Allen-Jenkins, Eliza Bryant Village Board of Trustees Chair.

Williams will succeed Harvey Shankman who will retire at the end of the year. Shankman played an instrumental role in leading the growth and evolution of Eliza Bryant Village, with the creation of the adult day and transportation program; opening of 149 units of senior housing with the Eliza Bryant Manor, Amasa Ford Lodge and Garden Estates; and establishment of a renal dialysis center on The Village's campus.

"Harvey's legacy of dedicated service and visionary leadership is to be celebrated and appreciated. We remain grateful to him for being an advocate for Cleveland's inner-city seniors. We wish him well in retirement and on his new journey," said Allen-Jenkins.

“I have truly been fortunate to serve The Free Clinic during a period of great transition in health care. The organization is well positioned to continue to provide high quality medical, dental and behavioral health care to Greater Clevelanders well into the future under its new operating model and new name, ‘Circle Health Services,’” said Danny Williams.

“While it was a difficult decision to leave the many colleagues and friends I have worked with over the last 10 years, I am confident Circle Health Services will continue to thrive and grow. I look forward to joining Eliza Bryant Village and helping the Board implement its vision of meeting the safety net needs for our growing senior population," said Williams.

Eliza Bryant Village, founded in 1896, is the oldest continuously operating African American-focused long-term care facility in the United States. Annually, it serves more than 1,200 seniors through programs including: Senior Independent Housing, Adult Day Programs, transportation services, and nutritious meals, The Rehab Center, Skilled Nursing Care and The Center for Dialysis Care at Eliza Bryant Village.

Eliza Bryant Village is only one of seven skilled nursing facilities in Ohio designated as a critical access facility. For the past 120 years, The Village has been an anchor in the neighborhood and a safety net for frail and vulnerable seniors living in Cleveland and surrounding communities.

“Living the Mission” Day for John Carroll University at Eliza Bryant Village

John Carroll University's Living the Mission Day at Eliza Bryant Village!

On Thursday, August 25th, Eliza Bryant Village welcomed approximately 65 John Carroll first year students to assist in various service projects around The Village. This was a part of John Carroll University's "Living the Mission" Day where all John Carroll first year students engaged in an activity as part of orientation week.

The volunteers were extremely helpful as The Village worked to prepare for the upcoming 120th Anniversary Celebration Kickoff to be held on Sunday, August 28th. They assisted in cleaning our grounds; painting and playing bingo with our residents; and preparing for our anniversary celebration kickoff by helping to fold programs and create poster board welcoming our guests.

Our residents truly appreciated their time in The Village and many of the students were excited to come back in the Fall for their weekly service commitment through the Center for Service and Social Action at John Carroll University.

Thank you to the organizers, JP Graulty and Samantha Cocco, and the first year John Carroll students! We wish them the absolute best as they embark upon their post secondary journey!
